xAI’s Grok plays catch up to ChatGPT

  • xAI’s Grok is catching up to its rivals and has started rolling out its own memory features.
  • This feature allows the chatbot to reference past interactions to make conversations feel more personalised.
  • Some users are complaining that the feature isn’t working as intended as of yet.

The generative AI chatbot of Elon Musk’s xAI and X social media platform, Grok, is looking to begin rolling out a memories feature similar to ChatGPT, though unlike the OpenAI’s platform, it doesn’t seem to be working yet.

According to a user on X, Grok is set to begin using “memories” of your previous interactions with the chatbot to influence future conversations. For example, if you have told it you are a writers, follow-up queries and prompts about literature and writing will be delivered to you through this context.

The feature was seen in Grok’s Data Controls options, called “Personalize with Memories.”

“Allow Grok to remember details from your previous conversations. Tap the book icon beneath a response to select conversations for Grok to forget. Temporary chats are never stored,” the AI says.

However some users are saying that they are unable to use the memory feature as of earlier this week, with the AI itself telling them that since the rollout it still ongoing and memory features are still in development, it may take some time before all users have access.

“We’re working on improving these features, so keep your app updated for the latest fixes. Thanks for your patience!” it said.

ChatGPT launched its memory features a day before the Grok feature was first noticed by users, but only for subscribers, with free members still waiting. While ChatGPT can currently add certain points to its memories of users and use these for context, the new ability to reference past interactions allow for even more personalised responses.

Like Grok, the ChatGPT feature is optional. While ChatGPT is the world’s most popular AI chatbot, including in South Africa, Grok claims to be growing quickly. In March, the AI announced that xAI was working to increase its GPUs to meet demand as it was seeing “high usage across the world.”
