- AMD revealed some new hardware at Computex in Taipei this week.
- The hardware maker revealed a new Radeon AI PRO 9700 and a Radeon RX 9060 XT.
- There are also a flurry of new Threadrippers arriving in July for professionals and enthusiasts.
Computex is happening this week in Taipei, Taiwan, and hardware makers are showing off their new products at the trade show.
Among those is AMD which showed off new graphics cards and processors. Let’s start with the graphics cards.
AMD’s new RX 9000 GPUs will be getting a baby brother in the Radeon RX 9060 XT. Billed as a GPU for 1440p gaming, this seems to be AMD’s response to Nvidia’s RTX 5060 Ti GPU. The RX 9060 XT will come in an 8GB GDDR6 and 16GB GDDR6 configuration with the amount of VRAM being the only real differentiator between the pair. The 8GB variant will have a starting price of $299 while the 16GB variant will cost $349.
AMD says that Acer, ASRock, ASUS, Gigabyte, PowerColor, Sapphire, Vastarmor, XFX and Yeston are all preparing cards for consumers with the GPUs coming “later this year”.
The other GPU AMD revealed was the Radeon AI PRO R9700. As the name implies, this GPU is suited for advanced AI developers. The R9700 will ship with 32GB which seems a bit low but it does seem to scale.
“The Radeon AI PRO R9700 also scales effectively in multi-GPU configurations, expanding memory and compute capacity for large models and parallel tasks. This flexibility makes it ideal for advanced workstations tackling complex simulations, real-time rendering, or concurrent AI workloads,” AMD writes.
The Radeon AI PRO R9700 is expected to be available in July this year.
Threads to rip
In addition to GPUs, AMD revealed all new Threadripper CPUs designed for AI model development, simulations and creating digital effects.
The top model on the runway is the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9995WX with 96 cores, 192 threads, a boost frequency of 5.4GHz and 128 PCIe 5.0 lanes. This should prove sufficient for professionals especially with all PRO CPUs featuring support for AMD PRO technologies including enterprise-grade security, manageability, and platform stability.
For enthusiast PC builders and gamers, AMD announced the Ryzen Threadripper 9000 Series (no PRO) with the 9980X at the top of the pops with 64 cores and 128 threads working to achieve a maximum frequency of 5.4GHz out of the box.
The PRO chips will be out later this year in prebuilt PCs from Dell, HP, Lenovo and Supermicro while the chips themselves – PRO and otherwise – will arrive in July.
“These announcements underscore our commitment to continue delivering industry-leading innovation across our product portfolio,” said Jack Huynh, senior vice president and general manager, Computing and Graphics Group at AMD.
“The Radeon RX 9060 XT and Radeon AI PRO R9700 bring the performance and AI capabilities of RDNA 4 to workstations and gamers all around the world, while our new Ryzen Threadripper 9000 Series sets the new standard for high-end desktops and professional workstations. Together, these solutions represent our vision for empowering creators, gamers, and professionals with the performance and efficiency to push boundaries and drive creativity,” he added.
We’re most curious about AMD’s Radeon RX 9060 XT. At present a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 Ti will cost around R13 000 depending on where you shop. That’s pricey for what is an entry-level card so if AMD can come in below that, it may be able to wrest control of the most popular GPU on Steam away from Jensen and co.
