Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile is now on life support

  • Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile will no longer receive updates as Activision winds down support for the title.
  • While servers will remain online, real-money transactions have been removed and no updates will come down the line for players.
  • The title has been removed from mobile storefronts but if it is installed, you can still play the game.

On Friday, Activision announced that by the end of the weekend, Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile would be shut down.

“This decision was made after careful consideration and while we’re proud of the accomplishment in bringing Call of Duty: Warzone to mobile in an authentic way, it unfortunately has not met our expectations with mobile-first players like it has with PC and console audiences,” Activision said in an announcement.

In-game purchases with real currency were disabled immediately but the in-game store remained open so that players could spend any remaining COD points. This put some players in a strange position where they didn’t have enough COD points to buy something but also couldn’t buy more COD points.

While the game has been delisted from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store, Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile remains playable for those who have the game installed. In fact, Activision Blizzard says that it will keep the servers online.

However, the game will receive nothing new. No new content, no in-game purchases, no ties to other Call of Duty titles and no more social features. Effectively, Activision is trying to push folks away from the game rather than just shutting down the servers and calling it a day, which is bizarre.

The developer is pushing folks to play Call of Duty: Mobile, instead.

Warzone Mobile players who log into Call of Duty: Mobile between now and 15th August will receive double their Warzone Mobile COD points balance and “other awesome rewards”.

Call of Duty: Mobile is free to play and features a 100-player Battle Royale mode (not Warzone) as well as a 5v5 Multiplayer mode. While it may not be Warzone, it could be a decent alternative to the standalone Battle Royale title. However, many Warzone Mobile players are disappointed that their game is no longer receiving any support and they are being pushed out a game they spent a year playing.

Players also spent a long time waiting for Warzone Mobile. The title was announced in 2022 but only arrived in March 2024. Now little more than a year later, Activision is pulling the plug.

It’s not clear how many people played Warzone Mobile. the r/WarzoneMobile sub-Reddit has just 31 000 members compared to Call of Duty Mobile’s over 300 000 members. That’s not the most accurate gauge of a player base but given that Activision won’t be spending a cent more than it has to on the game, it gives us an idea of just how small the player population likely was.

For Activision, which is now the property of Microsoft, a small player base is just a money sink and while we’re sure players will miss the game, those resources are probably best used elsewhere.
