- Dyson has introduced a new cordless vacuum cleaner to its lineup called the PencilVac.
- At 38mm throughout the body, it’s been dubbed the world’s thinnest vacuum cleaner.
- No local availability or pricing has been shared at the time of writing.
It is quite rare that we cover an announcement regarding a vacuum cleaner unless it’s round and robotic, but the new PencilVac from Dyson has piqued our interest.
Not only because Dyson has achieved an elite status among household appliances in recent years for its motor technology, but also because the company is christening the PencilVac as the world’s thinnest vacuum cleaner.
According to Dyson, the PencilVac weighs roughly 1.8kg and is 38mm thick through most of its body, excluding the head of course.
As the images shared by Dyson illustrate, there is no larger element to this vacuum cleaner, with all components housed within the cylindrical body. The company confirmed that this design means only 400ml of dirt can be collected and disposed of, as it looks like the company is aiming to keep pace with smartphone makers by going as thin as possible on its flagship products.

What makes the PencilVac so thin is the design of the motor, which is akin to the technology that Dyson employs for its wildly popular Supersonic hair dryer. Here, a new Hyperdymium 140k motor is present, which is 28mm thin and is said to be Dyson’s “thinnest and fastest vacuum motor” to date.
While we cannot attest to its suction capabilities compared to other cordless vacuum cleaners in the range, per Engadget, it did a solid job in picking up debris and dirt in the short time that the publication got hands-on time. “It sucked up Cheerios, cookies and other detritus with ease,” the publication noted.
Along with the thinness of the form factor, Dyson has also prioritised filtration and sanitisation technologies on the PencilVac. On this front, it features a newly designed filtration system that Dyson said, “effectively separates dust and debris from the airflow without causing filters to clog or cleaning performance to decline.”
Added to this is a new, “two-stage linear dust separation system, which captures 99.99 percent of particles down to 0.3 microns so only cleaner air is expelled back into the home.”
In terms of local availability and pricing, the PencilVac is still some ways off, with it only slated for release in the US sometime next year. Should an official local release be in the offing, we expect to see the PencilVac appear all over social media as influencers tout its capabilities, making it interesting to see how large a price tag is placed on it.
