OPPO has a new mid-range smartphone landing in South Africa in the form of the A5 Pro.

It joins an ever-expanding lineup of mid-range options by the Chinese smartphone maker, and is listed to retail in SA for R7 999 via local networks Vodacom, MTN, and Cell C.

So what do you get for R8k?

Well the OPPO A5 Pro features many of the hallmarks that one can expect from a solid mid-range phone these days. It is also being touted as highly durable, which too has been a trend among affordably priced mid-range devices in 2025.

Here, the A5 Pro has an IP69 rating for waterproofness, which is slightly higher than what we see listed on most smartphones these days. OPPO notes that the A5 Pro has an, “all-round water resistant body… proven to resist immersion, water jets, and hot water up to 80℃ by passing the three rigorous tests of IP69, IP68, and IP66.”

“The phone’s sealed frame, reinforced screen, and shock-absorbing internal components mean it can handle drops, bumps, and dusty environments with ease. It’s certified to Military-Grade Standards after passing fourteen environmental tests. If the screen is wet or oily or you’re wearing gloves, there’s no problem. OPPO’s Splash Touch and Glove Mode ensure smooth operation without any issues,” it added in a release shared with Hypertext.

One of the other notable elements is the battery, which has a higher-than-average capacity at this price point at 5 800mAh. It also supports OPPO’s 45W SUPERVOOC fast charging. which powers the phone up to 30 percent in under 20 minutes.

It is also worth pointing out some of the AI-powered features available on the A5 Pro. On this front, the company highlighted that, “If you want to tweak or edit your photos, AI tools like Reflection Remover, AI Unblur, or AI Studio allow you to enhance, stylise, or animate with ease. And for those underwater pool shots or beach days, the A5 Pro even supports Underwater Photography Mode.”

With there being an almost endless number of solid mid-range phones to choose from locally at the the moment, it will be interesting to see how the latest one from OPPO performs.
