The week’s best new trailers

  • New trailers this week dropped for Weapons and The Smashing Machine.
  • Weapons is shaping up to be one of the best horror films in quite some time.
  • Dwayne Johnson looks almost unrecognisable in his dramatic turn for The Smashing Machine.

Last week, a teaser trailer surfaced for an upcoming horror film called Weapons. Setting up a terrifying premise, along with some ingenious marketing, a fully fledged trailer dropped this week that is even more terrifying, using a child’s narration that only serves to amp up the horror tenfold.

Weapons hits cinemas on 8th August, and if what we have seen to date is anything to go by, it promises to be one the biggest horror films of recent years.

“When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance,” reads a description of Weapons trailer, featured below. “The film stars Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, with Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan.”

As for the other new trailers that caught our interest this week, a surprise new offering stars Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. No, not in a Jungle Cruise sequel, but something that looks quite good called The Smashing Machine.

Johnson looks nearly unrecognisable as real MMA fighter Mark Kerr, with one-half of the Safdie brothers (Good Tmes, Uncut Gems), Benny Safdie, serving as writer and director on this project. With A24 producing, it is great to see Johnson showcase some acting chops in what should be a heartwrenching film about the world of fighting and substance abuse.

Other notable new trailers featured in this week’s roundup include two films coming to Prime Video – Deep Cover and The Better Sister – landing on the streaming platform on 12th June and 29th May respectively.

Rounding up the new trailers feature is a behind-the-scenes look at the chaotic creation of the original John Wick film, as well as the third instalment in the Now You See Me franchise, titled Now You Don’t. Wick is Pain arrives digitally on 8th May, although it remains to see which platforms will receive it, while Now You See Me: Now You Don’t lands on 14th November.
