Hey you, how was Christmas? Did you eat lots and get many gifts? Excellent. Now it’s time to resume our trip down memory lane…
Remember when the weather started to warm up and we all began to get out more? That’s right, September was hot and dry and active all over the country. But what was going on in tech? Well obviously there was the small matter of a new Apple phone which launched internationally on the 10th, but let’s face, no-one buys Apple gear in South Africa.

Get an iPad for Christmas did you? Sorry.
- September kicked off with Geek Fest. Which is awesome. A massive gathering of nerds playing boardgames and wearing cosplay. We love it.
- We caught up with more words and video about the might Mr Stallman. He spoke about Project PRISM and eTolls. They’re both bad, in case you were wondering.
- Another tech luminary arrived in the country, sci-fi writer and BoingBoing ed, Cory Doctorow. Here’s what he had to say about the new national ID card.
- And in keeping with the writerly theme, we bagged some time with South Africa’s own sci-fi superstar, Lauren Beukes. This, incidentally, was one of my favourite pieces of the year.
- Outside of books, we met up with Pretoria-based student movement, Geekulcha, which wants to teach the kids to tech.
And that was our literary September. Until tomorrow.
Oh, and if you got a Kindle yesterday, go download Lauren’s books. They’re ace.
