X changes how blocked accounts work

  • Blocked accounts on X can still see a blocker’s posts following a recent change.
  • Blocking only limits the ability to interact with posts.
  • Elon Musk says that it is “high time this happened”.

Following a recent change, blocking an account on X no longer has the desired effect that a blocker may have hoped. This as blocked accounts will still be able to see the posts of a blocker.

While X (formerly Twitter) did not formally announce the change to blocked accounts, owner Elon Musk seemingly confirmed it in a reply to another user. There he noted that, “The block function will block that account from engaging with, but not block seeing, public post.”

He also pointed out that it is, “High time this happened.”

While we do not share Musk’s opinion on the matter, it is unclear why such a change has been made, but some feedback shared with The Verge by a staff member at X may offer some insight.

The publication’s unnamed source noted that the change was made as users can already view posts from those who’ve blocked them when using another account or when logged out. While the former claim may be true, the latter is not in our experience.

It is also unclear whether being able to view posts from another account is enough to limit the functionality of blocked accounts altogether, especially when such a feature has not been officially commented to users in any capacity.

As such, a user may choose to block an account without the knowledge that now doing so, achieves very little.

With Musk having already shared his disdain for the block button, and posited the use of a further reaching mute function, it will be interesting to see whether X rolls out another feature to give users greater control over who sees their posts.

For now, however, blocking accounts on X is less effective than it was previously.
