Impressive Xiaomi 14T flagship launches in South Africa

  • Xiaomi has launched its 14T flagship smartphone in South Africa.
  • With the 14T, Xiaomi is packing high performance hardware and an impressive camera system.
  • You can grab the device right now in two colours either on contract or for R20 499 at outlets nationwide.

South African customers have proven ready to embrace flagship and premium devices from manufacturers after years that brands like Xiaomi only imported affordable, low-specced options. This is all changed in 2023, and now Xiaomi is set to launch one of its latest flagships, the Xiaomi 14T, in South Africa.

It is a phone packed with high-end hardware, with performance and camera array as the major selling points.

“The Xiaomi 14T is powered by the latest MediaTek processors and stunning AMOLED displays, is designed for seamless AI integration and versatile use, ensuring an elevated smartphone experience,” the brand says about the new machine.

“Next-Level Night Photography with Leica Optics The Xiaomi 14T Series revolutionizes smartphone photography, particularly at night. Whether capturing vibrant Johannesburg cityscapes or low-light environments, South African users will enjoy incredible clarity with the Xiaomi 14T,” it adds.

Though not the largest display, the 14T ships with a crisp AMOLED screen but the first thing that is really noticeable is its RAM and chipset. With either 12GB or 16GB of RAM and one of the latest MediaTek processors in the 8300 Ultra.

You’re likely to see good speed on the 14T, but we’re a bit disappointed there isn’t a 1TB option for storage space. If you’re going to go all out with specs, you might as well go all out.

The camera is a major focus, as previously indicated, especially as they have been designed in partnership with Leica. Many of the promotional shots of the Xiaomi 14T feature the back of the device, highlighting the four-window setup on the rear. Most smartphones nowadays have either two or three, so likely Xiaomi wants it to be impactful even if one of the windows is actually the torch.

Still though, with two 50MP snappers and one 12MP ultrawide lens on the back, and a massive 32MP selfie cam, amateur photographers will not see the Xiaomi 14T slouching when it comes to photography.

Xiaomi says, of course, that the picture-taking is bolstered by AI software, but there are a number of AI features included.

Also important to note is that the device ships with IP68 water and dust resistance, which is one of the highest standards of both. You can submerge the phone up to 1.5 metres for up to 30 minutes, for example.

The Xiaomi 14T now also features generative AI tools included in other Android-running devices, including AI Notes, AI Recorder which can transcribe audio, and the new and improved Circle to Search.

Pricing and availabity

Xiaomi South Africa says that the Xiaomi 14T starts at R799 per month at Vodacom stores on contract, the company also says that it will be available for retail at major retailers and Xiaomi stores. Retail price is sitting at R20 499.

You can grab it in either Black or Blue.
