OPPO says Find N5 is thinnest foldable to hit market to date

  • Some details have surfaced for an upcoming foldable from OPPO – the Find N5.
  • While a specific measurement has not been shared, OPPO is christening it the thinnest foldable to hit the market to date.
  • When unfolded its body is almost as thin as a USB Type-C port.

It has been awhile since OPPO revealed a new foldable phone, at least in smartphone industry terms. The first, and only, OPPO foldable to land in SA was 2023’s Find N2 Flip and now the company is readying to debut a new device in the form of the Find N5.

This is not a flip-style foldable, but rather a folio one, with the hinge placed vertically instead of horizontally. As such it is designed to get larger and support a tablet-like interface, making to the Flip models which get compact.

Ahead of a fully fledged reveal, for which there is no timeframe or date at this stage, some details for the Find N5 have been shared online by Find series product manager Zhou Yibao.

Per The Verge, Zhou has highlighted the ultra thin design of the phone thanks to a video and some images posted to Chinese site Weibo, with specific elements of the Find N5 being shown off.

Pushing the limit in terms of what is possible on a foldable phone, Zhou explained that it is only the necessity of a USB Type-C charging port that remains an obstacle. As mentioned, no precise specifications have been shared, but looking at the images from Zhou, it looks like the Find N5 may indeed be the thinnest foldable in the world when it is officially unveiled.

Right now, the HONOR Magic V3 holds that title, as it is 4.35mm thin when unfolded. Looking at some of the comparisons that Zhou has mentioned thus far, the Find N5 could be 4mm thin exactly, as he says it is as thin as two Chinese Yuan coins, or 39 Post-It notes, or four ID cards.

Everyday objects aside, the Find N5 looks to be quite the feat of engineering.

The only question is whether it will be slated to launch in SA. As highlighted, the brand only has one foldable in the local market, and it has been a couple of years since it launched, so adding a new option to the mix may be worthwhile, even if it is a small quantity.
