The Last of Us season 2 set for 13th April

  • The Last of Us Season 2 will arrive on HBO Max on 13th April.
  • There are only seven episodes slated for this upcoming season, which picks up five years after the events of season one.
  • It is unclear precisely how close the second season will follow The Last of Us Part II game.

A month ago HBO Max dropped its latest trailer for The Last of Us season two. The end of the trailer, which introduces a new character in Abby, noted that season two would arrive in April.

Now we have a more definitive date, with the second season arriving on HBO Max on 13th April. It will follow a weekly episodic format, just like the previous season, but only features seven episodes this time around.

“Season 2 of The Last of Us picks up five years after the events of Season 1. Joel and Ellie’s collective past catches up to them, drawing them into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind,” reads a description via HBO.

With the first season having been lauded as a success by most, it will be interesting to see how the season season shapes up, namely as the sequel to the wildly popular original game that came out in 2020 proved highly divisive.

In order to avoid spoilers for non-gamers, we will not discuss the events of The Last of Us Part II, but will note that one of the very early scenes in the game angered many fans.

Producers for the show have not gone into details, but they have explained that season two will not mirror the events of Part II exactly. As such, we’re hoping they avoid the divisive element from the game in order to keep viewers happy, or at the very least adopt a different approach.

Either way, with HBO also airing The White Lotus season 3 at the moment, 2025 will be a big year for the studio.

For South Africans keen to watch season two, while MultiChoice has not issued any statement at the time of writing, we expect episodes from the second season to be available to stream on Showmax a few hours after the United States, along with DStv airing the following day. This was the case with last season, as well as several other HBO-made shows like House of the Dragon.

With Winter just on the horizon, we will likely be spending that time cozied up on the couch watching The Last of Us season two. You can read our review of the divisive sequel game by clicking on the embedded post below.
