- Sony has confirmed that international prices for the PSVR 2 are being decreased by quite a bit.
- This is likely in response to poor sales worldwide.
- South African representatives of the brand has confirmed that the price will also be decreased locally.
The PlayStation VR 2 (PSVR2) has been discounted significantly by its manufacturer Sony, likely because worldwide sales have been weak. In an announcement, it says this new price sees it drop from $499/$599 to just $399 or just around R8 000.
In South Africa, the setup was selling for around R15 000 at different outlets while it initially launched on BT Games at R13 499 in November 2022.
“For those of you who have been waiting for the opportunity to jump into PlayStation VR2 and experience what this generation’s innovative virtual reality system has to offer, we are happy to share some great news! Starting in March, we’re reducing the recommended retail price (RRP) of PS VR,” Sony’s VP for global marketing, Isabelle Tomatis said in an announcement.
The international price is being slashes for all versions of the PSVR 2, including the Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle which includes the game of the same name. Previously, this bundle was more expensive.
For the $399 price, you can now get the PSVR 2 headset, PSVR 2 Sense controller and stereo headphones, with the added game if you buy the bundled version.
The headset, although featuring significantly improved tech from the previous iteration, was considered extremely pricey on launch as it required a PlayStation 5 to use, which still retails for more than R10 500 at the cheapest.
In March last year, it was reported that Sony had manufactured more PSVR 2 headsets than were being moved, forcing them to stop production altogether in order to sell off the remaining stock before making any more.
This latest price drop is likely the next step in these efforts and bodes ill for the headset. Aside from pricing, the main drawback is that there simply isn’t enough popular games that require the headset.
The first PSVR launched alongside the highly anticipated Resident Evil: Biohazard and saw excellent integration with that game. The PSVR 2 hasn’t had a game where anyone thought it was necessary to purchase the setup to experience it.
While it can also be said that the PS5 also lacks feature games, the bleed off into the PSVR2 means that few units are being sold. Sony is hoping Metro Awakening VR, Alien: Rogue Incursion, and others like No Man’s Sky can attract players to the VR headset, it just may not be enough.
New PSVR 2 pricing in South Africa?
PlayStation representatives in South Africa have confirmed that the PSVR 2 is seeing a discounted price locally, from the launch price. However we are still in the process of confirming exactly what this price will be and will update this article accordingly when we finally have official confirmation.
We’re hoping to see the console at least be reduced to around R8 000 but this may not be the case, as we’re still seeing many retailers selling the PSVR 2 for around R15 000, while others are seeing drops to around R10 000.
