GPT-4.1 is OpenAI’s latest multimodal offering

  • OpenAI has released its latest set of generative AI models in the form of GPT-4.1.
  • It consists of three different models – GPT‑4.1, GPT‑4.1 mini, and GPT‑4.1 nano.
  • They are said to offer better performance at a lower cost, as well as being more natural conversationalists.

OpenAI has a new multimodal generative AI model in the form of GPT-4.1.

The new offering is designed to replace the outgoing GPT-4.5 as the company’s developer AI, with OpenAI noting several improvements for its latest model. Like previous iterations, there are three different models within the series for developers to utilise – GPT‑4.1, GPT‑4.1 mini, and GPT‑4.1 nano.

“These models outperform GPT‑4o and GPT‑4o mini across the board, with major gains in coding and instruction following. They also have larger context windows—supporting up to 1 million tokens of context—and are able to better use that context with improved long-context comprehension. They feature a refreshed knowledge cutoff of June 2024,” OpenAI explained in a blog post.

In third-party benchmarking, the company highlighted where 4.1 excels over its previous models, with it being 26.6 percent better GPT‑4.5 at coding, which makes it the leading model available on the market, according to OpenAI, in this regard. Added to this, it is 10.5 percent better at following instructions than GPT‑4o, as well as being 6.7 percent better at multimodal long context understanding.

“While benchmarks provide valuable insights, we trained these models with a focus on real-world utility. Close collaboration and partnership with the developer community enabled us to optimize these models for the tasks that matter most to their applications,” OpenAI advised.

“To this end, the GPT‑4.1 model family offers exceptional performance at a lower cost,” it continued.

Speaking of pricing (in US Dollars), OpenAI has outlined the following for each of the three new models:

Model (Prices per 1M tokens)InputCached inputOutputBlended Pricing
GPT-4.1$2.00$0.50$8.00$1.84
GPT-4.1-mini$0.40$0.10$1.60$0.42
GPT-4.1-nano$0.10$0.025$0.40$0.12

“Through efficiency improvements to our inference systems, we’ve been able to offer lower prices on the GPT‑4.1 series.GPT‑4.1 is 26% less expensive than GPT‑4o for median queries, and GPT‑4.1 nano is our cheapest and fastest model ever,” OpenAI boasted.

It also confirmed that GPT‑4.1, GPT‑4.1 mini, and GPT‑4.1 nano are available to all developers now, with GPT-4.5 being phased out within the next three months by 14th June 2025.
