• The 2025 Google I/O developer conference kicks off tomorrow.
• The keynote, which will be delivered by Alphabet CEO, Sundar Pichai, starts at 19:00 South African time.
• Google is expected to focus almost solely on AI.

Tomorrow, Google will kick off its annual developer conference, with I/O 2025 taking place between 22nd and 21st May this week.

The keynote for the annual event is the usual jumping-off point, and this year will be presented at 19:00 South African time tomorrow.

“Discover how we’re furthering our mission to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful,” reads a description of the keynote, which will be followed by the more intensive developer keynote address.

As for what Google will actually be showcasing during the keynote, as was the case last year, much of the focus will be around the company’s objectives with AI. In fact, AI is such a key focus for Google and its parent company Alphabet of late, that it hosted an Android specific event last week.

This is notable given the mobile ecosystem and accompanying operating system has always taken centre stage at I/O.

That said, there should be some mobile-related news during the keynote, with Google expected to unpack more of its plans with the Gemini platform, as well as how tools and solutions within it will be pushed to smartphones.

This could open up opportunities to detail Project Astra too, which is Google’s next evolution for AI-powered assistants on phones.

Also on the devices front, is what Google has been working on for extended reality (XR) experiences. Whether we will see the Project Moohan headset in action is unclear for now, but it is the flagship device when it comes to Google’s XR ambitions.

Lastly, in terms of rumours, it is believed that Google will showcase what it wants to do with Wear OS for smartwatches and other wearables, while reports suggest it is gearing up to showcase its rival platform to Pinterest this week as well.

Either way, this promises to be another important I/O for Google.
