As South Africans contend with life under adjusted level 3 lockdown, MTN is trying to get more of its customers to download the zero-rated COVID-19 Alert App by offering 1GB of free data. The free data offer, which expires one hour after you’ve download the app, has no specific end date as of the time of writing.
For those unfamiliar with the COVID-19 Alert App, it was developed by Discovery, uses your mobile phone’s Bluetooth and has been designed to help the National Department of Health (NDoH) help track and trace infections in the country.
Those with reservations about suing such an app should be made aware of the fact that all data is private and anonymised, according to the NDoH.
“One of the critical aspects of combatting COVID-19 is the ability to detect positive cases early and to isolate as many contacts as possible. The COVID Alert SA app gives every smartphone user in South Africa the chance to understand their exposure to the virus, so that we can all protect our families and our communities, and especially those people who are most at risk of severe disease,” explains MTN SA’s executive for Corporate Affairs, Jacqui O’Sullivan, on why the company is offering this incentive.
“For Bluetooth contact tracing to be effective, at least 10-15% of the population must download and use app in a given area. At 60% uptake, suppression of the virus can be achieved. This is why we have taken the steps to zero rate and even reward our customers whom have downloaded the app,” she adds.
With new daily infections continuing to rise, downloading the app should be a priority for anyone who is at risk. For MTN customers, there’s now a little extra on offer, if you do.
