The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Google is working on a wristwatch and a gaming console to directly combat similar devices that Apple are developing. The now standard line of ‘people familiar with the matter’ gives no insight into whether the rumour came to the WSJ from reliable sources but when looked at in relations to where Google finds itself in the industry the rumour does seem to have some merit. Google is already heavily invested in the ‘wearables’ category of devices with its Google Glass program and a smartwatch that has similar functionality but without the invasive overtones and privacy issues that Glass brings with it would make sense for Google especially if Apple is going ahead with the rumoured ‘iWatch’. We already know that Android powered gaming consoles are a direction that the gaming community wants to go in from the heavily funded OUYA Kickstarter campaign which brought in over $8.5 million in funding. Google has of course declined to comment on the rumour but with all of the indications in place it may not be a rumour for much longer.
