Doug Engelbart is being hailed in many obituaries today as the inventor of the mouse, but this American inventor is responsible for so much more. In this hour-and-a-half long demo from 1968, Engelbart shows off a system he helped design, featuring a mouse, graphical user interface, clickable hyperlinks, and even video conferencing.
A bit dry at times, but still fascinating to think that here are bits of computing that would be come standard, shown off a good 20 years before they became available in the mainstream market.
Rest in peace, Mr. Engelbart, and thanks for your contributions.
