Top Gun 2 is real and it will star Tom Cruise

It might be time to dig out your copy of Kenny Loggins’ massive hit ‘Danger Zone’ because Maverick is going to be flying fast, heavy and weapons hot again.

Yes, the huge theatrical hit ‘Top Gun’ that made Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer household names is getting a sequel, with producer David Ellison and super-creator Jerry Bruckheimer attached to the project.

The news about a sequel isn’t such a surprise to insiders in the film industry, as the project has apparently been in the works for at least five years.

Bruckheimer briefly mentioned in 2010 that he and producer Don Simpson were looking into to making the sequel, but discussions came to a halt with the death of original Top Gun director Tony Scott in 2012.

Nevertheless, Ellison has confirmed that a scriptwriter has been hired to plot out the events of the much-awaited sequel.

“Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now,” said Ellison during group interview at the press day for Terminator Genisys in Berlin.

“He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy has turned into today. There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick,” he confirmed.

This could be a make-or-break situation for Marks, as he hasn’t exactly been working on blockbuster projects in the past. His biggest project so far is probably ‘Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li’ which starred Kristin Kreuk, Neal McDonough and Michael Clarke Duncan. That film has an IMDb rating of 3.7 out of 10.

As for the plot, it will focus on military drones and the place of Navy fighters in today’s technological-driven world.

“When you look at the world of dogfighting, what’s interesting about it is that it’s not a world that exists to the same degree when the original movie came out. This world has not been explored. It is very much a world we live in today where it’s drone technology and fifth generation fighters are really what the United States Navy is calling the last man-made fighter that we’re actually going to produce so it’s really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today are all fun things that we’re going to get to dive into in this movie,” he said.
