Grooveshark creator found dead at 28

The creator and co-founder of Grooveshark, Josh Greenberg, has been found dead at his home in Gainesville Florida. He was 28-years-old.

According to a report on the BBC website, local police said on Twitter that there was “no evidence of foul play or suicide”. Greenberg’s body was discovered by his girlfriend, Abbey Mayer, who had returned to their home after spending a weekend away.

A medical examiner has conducted an autopsy to determine the cause of Greenberg’s death, and a toxicology report is expected within the next couple of months. Lori Greenberg, his mother, told the Gainesville Sun that the police who investigated the scene where the body of her son was found said that there was no evidence of injuries or drugs.

“They’re as baffled as I am,” she said.

Greenberg founded the music-streaming service, Grooveshark, in March of 2006 with his friend Sam Tarantino while the pair of them were students at the University of Florida. Business Insider says that Grooveshark boasted a user-base of 40 million monthly users and had 145 employees in total working out of offices in Gainesville and New York.

The company had to close its doors in April of this year after record companies Warner, Universal and Sony sued Grooveshark over copyright infringement, amounting to around $17 billion.

In spite of this, Lori Greenberg said her son wasn’t depressed about the lawsuit and that, rather, he was in high spirits.

“He was excited about potential new things that he was going to start,” Mrs Greenberg said.
