2018 was a banner year for mirrorless cameras, with the likes of Nikon, Fujifilm and Canon all laying down markers for the industry. 2019 is shaping up to be no different, and Canon has already explained some of its plans for the upcoming year.

In an interview with Imaging Resource, the Japanese company confirmed that it will have an 8K-capable full frame mirrorless camera that it will bring to market some time in 2019, with no precise date mentioned just yet.

This will be joined by an entry-level version of the EOS R that the camera maker revealed last year, but at the moment we’re more intrigued by the 8K offering.

We say this as it can be argued that Canon fell behind the ranks of Nikon and Fujifilm somewhat in 2018 when it comes to professional-level mirrorless cameras, with the Nikon Z6 / Z7 and Fujifilm X-H1 proving more compelling options that what Canon was able to muster.

Shifting back to to the 8K model that Canon plans to being to the fore, a spokesperson for the company explained that this full frame mirrorless camera will be part of the EOS R lineup. As such we should probably see it in the second half of this year, as was the case for 2018’s EOS R camera.

With Canon now looking to introduce 8K to its EOS R range, it appears as if the Japanese company is leaning into the importance that having high quality video capabilities will play in the mirrorless camera market.

“Video will play a huge role in the EOS R System for sure. For example, an 8K video capable camera is already in our EOS R-series roadmap. And we are not just looking at video from a camera perspective, we are also working on how to make RF lenses better for video capture as well,” noted a Canon spokesperson.

With the company now laying down a gauntlet so to speak, it should be interesting to see how its Japanese counterparts react.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Canon EOS R system we advise giving the video below, featuring the brilliantly mustachioed Rudy Winston, below.
