Over the past couple of years HMD Global has built up a reputation for making solid Nokia phones that offer good value for money. Their latest offering, the Nokia 2.2, seemingly keeps that recently developed tradition alive by being a €99 (~R1 682) smartphone for budget conscious consumers.
So what is the Nokia 2.2 packing?
Up front is a 5.7″ HD+ display which runs edge-to-edge, along with sporting a screen notch at the top. That houses a 5MP selfie camera, which also facilitates face unlocking and has liveliness detection so as not to be fooled by printed images. On the rear a 13MP camera is present, with Nokia throwing in some AI algorithmic assistance to help render better shots.
Internally a quad-core MediaTek A22 chipset is found and HMD Global has opted for a 3GB RAM and 2GB RAM setup, with each paired with 32GB and 16GB storage respectively. There’s also a 3 000mAh battery, although the company has not noted the battery life, but we’re assuming it’s close to the predecessor’s two-day claims.
For now there’s no word on when or indeed if the Nokia 2.2 will be coming to South Africa, but seeing as the Nokia 2.1 and Nokia 2 both landed locally, we’re expecting an imminent announcement.
As such it should be interesting to see just how aggressive HMD Global gets with the price point on the Nokia 2.2.
