Earlier this week Liquid Telecom held a roundtable with local tech media to discuss the firm’s latest findings from its African Digital Skills report for 2019.

After unpacking several of the issues plaguing the continent from a skills requirement perspective, chief HR officer Rebecca Mosehle, highlighted some of the initiatives that Liquid Telecom currently has on offer to address specific digital needs.

One such offering is an online platform that offers free training – 21CSkills.

To date Liquid Telecom has used the platform to train data science students for the company’s DataHack4FI competition, with it available to those in seven countries on the continent including South Africa. It also saw 374 students enrol in at least one 21CSkills course in order to learn necessary data science skills.

The firm adds that it has held meetups in all seven countries, along with i2i, in order to engage with students more directly outside of the online portal.

Data science is not the only focus of the platform, although they do offer 15 free programmes to those interested in picking up some knowledge, with a number of programmes available for IoT, cybersecurity, cloud computing and artificial intelligence, with game development also on the way.

The firm adds that one of the best things about their courses, apart from being free, is the fact that it will give you access to a network of fellow learners who you can interact with. As such if you’re struggling with an issue, you may be able to find a learner who has it down pat, and vice versa.

If the student network does not catch your fancy, Liquid Telecom adds that it has industry experts on call too to handle any queries, or simply to provide assistance.

As we wait for government to make access to digital skills more widely available, platforms like 21CSkills from Liquid Telecom are well worth checking out in the interim.
