Jeep recruits Groundhog Day cast for Super Bowl ad

Super Bowl LIV (54) has come and gone which means those of us outside of the US (and those who aren’t American football fans) get to check out the ads as they propagate onto places like YouTube. The most inventive of these ads is likely that from Jeep, who has us reliving Groundhog Day once again.

For its commercial focusing on the Gladiator, Jeep brought back Bill Murray, Stephen Tobolowsky, Brian Doyle-Murray and the groundhog. Well, we’re pretty sure that last one is CGI.

Extras representing Andie MacDowell and Chris Elliott can also be seen in the background in front of their TV van. These two have their backs turned to the camera, so we’re pretty sure neither of them were involved.

You can see the trio in the header image above.

As for the content of the ad, it’s actually done incredibly well. It manages to balance the gimmick of its premise with hero shots and features of the Gladiator. We’re not sure if Murray, at the age of 69, is the kind of person interested in a sports truck and the active life shown in the video, but that’s besides the point.

The full commercial can be seen in the embed below.

Aside from Jeep the other two standouts of the advertising for the Super Bowl included content from Marvel (both for the Disney+ shows and the upcoming Black Widow movie) and Jason Momoa in a sport for mortgage company. That last one sounds a bit weird but is also interesting in its own right.
