Yesterday Cell C announced a Lifeline package.
However, in that release there was the following statement:
“Cell C will by 1 May 2020, launch a free lifeline package capped at 250KB per day at a bundle size determined by Cell C, accessible to the Cell C pre-paid customer base.”
Unsure about what this meant we contacted Cell C to find out what that 250KB figure represented.
At first we thought it was the speed of the connection which would be understandable. We’re not saying 250Kbps is good, but if for instance Cell C was giving customers unlimited free data only at a severely knee-capped speed, we’d understand.
But as it turns out, that isn’t the case a 250KB is the minimum data a Cell C customer can receive through a Lifeline Package.
The exact amount of data given in this package will be determined by a customer’s use of Cell C services over a seven day period.
That means that if you recharge your airtime, buy a data bundle, send an SMS or make a call, you will earn more free data via the Lifeline Package.
With this in mind, it seems as if not using any Cell C services for a week may only net a customer 250KB. Unfortunately, Cell C can’t confirm this right now as it is still finalising details of the Lifeline Package.
That having been said, as it stands, giving folks 250KB of data for free is laughable.
For example, yesterday’s story about this package clocks in at 972.40KB. That means that if a Lifeline Package user gets the minimum amount of data, they wouldn’t even be able to read about the package.
Hell, the Cell C homepage clocks in at 4.73MB. That free data would load five percent of that homepage if at all.
While all of this is still being finalised we have to wonder why Cell C mentioned any of this to begin with.
For one, we’ve spent upwards of a day simply trying to decipher the statement. Secondly, nobody at Cell C can tell us exactly how the data bundle will be determined, how customers will qualify or indeed anything beyond the name.
We understand the market is frantically trying to adjust to rulings from the Competition Commission last year but Cell C was not included in those rulings.
As it stands, the Lifeline Package is not as much of a lifeline as the name infers, particularly if customers have to spend more in order to get more benefit from the package.
We now await more details about this package from Cell C and we’ll be sure to provide more information as it is released.
