Google’s ad-free mobile service, Play Plus, expands to nine countries

Google Play Plus, which is the company’s subscription-based service that removes in-app purchases and makes mobile gaming and app use ad-free, is being expanded to territories outside of the USA. Nine of them to be more precise.

Before you head to the Play Store to look for Play Plus yourself, the service is not headed to South Africa just yet. The nine countries that are getting it, however, are Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Spain and the United Kingdom, all of which should see it appear in-store later this week.

Stateside, this service typically costs $4.99 (~R83) per month, with Google now set to introduce a yearly subscription option that would be more cost effective in the long run at $29.99 (~R499) per year.

While being able to enjoy mobile games and apps without the interference of ads or in-app purchases sounds worthwhile, working off of the current exchange rate, you’d still be paying a hefty price for the service, even in its monthly form.

It is also worth noting that Play Plus does not work on every game or app that exists within the Play Store, so the ad-free experience is dependant on what content you’re using on your Android smartphone.

This is something that Google is working on though, adding more titles to the Play Pass service each month.

“Over the past few months, we’ve added over 150 new titles—from racing games to drawing apps—to the Play Pass catalog, and are continuing to add new content every month,” the company explained in a recent blog post.

With people spending more time indoors thanks to COVID-19 and lockdown, perhaps a solution like this could prove worthwhile. For right now, however, we’ll have to see whether Android users in the nine new countries are willing to pay for it.
