The number of new daily cases for COVID-19 in South Africa is beginning to rise at an alarming rate.

This as the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH) sees 8 166 new cases being recorded over the past 24 hours, which is a sharp increase over yesterday’s figures.

As such, when the Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize noted that a second wave of infections is now expected for the country, his prediction is coming to fruition. If cases continue to rise at this level, it remains to be seen what government does in terms of lockdown and restrictions.

While we wait for word on that front, we can take a look at the other figures from the latest NDoH report, which sees the total number of infections for the country to date rise to 836 764. Added to this is confirmation that over 5.73 million tests have been conducted to date, along with 756 671 recoveries (90.42 percent).

Unfortunately 173 new fatalities have been recorded, with the Eastern Cape and Western Cape again accounting for the majority with 90 and 52 respectively. As a result, the total number of deaths related to COVID-19 now stands at 22 747.
