Warner Bros shuffle sees release date of Dune delayed again

It looks like we’ll have to wait a bit longer before we can watch Denis Villeneuve’s highly anticipated interpretation of Frank Herbert’s Dune. This as Variety reports that the film will be released in cinemas and HBO Max on 22nd October, following the latest shuffle by Warner Bros..

It is the latest setback for the film, which Villeneuve himself noted as being under threat from Warner Bros. insistence on being a simultaneous streaming release. While we hope that is not the case, as it currently stands, for those in South Africa wanting to see the film, heading to cinemas is the only option at this stage.

That said, given the scale and scope of the project, seeing it on the big screen is likely the best option for a first viewing.

As for what else has been shuffled by Warner Bros. now that Dune will release on 22nd October instead of 1st October, the studio has confirmed that The Sopranos prequel titled The Many Saints of Newark will now take Dune’s place. Another film that have moved is Clint Eastwood’s Cry Macho, which is now scheduled for 17th September.

As for why the new delay has been made is unclear, but given how the release of the film has been handled up until now, it would not surprise us if another delay was on the cards.

We hope the film still garners enough interest when it is released, as Villeneuve’s past project, Blade Runner 2049 was visually impressive, but did not prove to be the box office success that Warner Bros. was hoping. Given that access to cinemas across the globe is difficult given the pandemic, we’re hoping middling box office returns do not jeopardise future Dune films.

If you still have not seen the promising trailer for the film, hit play on the video after the break.
