Artist recreates ‘steamed hams’ through JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure

Okay this one will seem a bit weird if you don’t spend an inordinate amount of time on the internet: an artist has recreated the now famous “steamed hams” scene from The Simpsons, but in the style of  JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure.

That artist is Merryweather Comics, a rather popular force on both Twitter and YouTube best known for cultural mashups like this as well as projects where concepts like game consoles and memes are reinterpreted as cute anime girls.

To catch everyone up with The Simpsons part of this, “steamed hams” refers to a scene from the show’s 21st episode in season seven. Featuring Principal Skinner and Superintendent Chalmers, the segment from 1996 experienced a rebirth in current years where people would remake and recut the footage endlessly to create new content.

There’s a further explanation of this here, but some of our favourites include a different animator every 13 seconds, a twisting into Feel Good Inc. by Gorillaz and another recreation through Seinfeld.

Like most memes it’s best not to think about it too critically and just accept that the internet takes a simple idea – this time a funny scene from The Simpsons – and runs with it.

For Merryweather Comics’ spin on things the scene has been redrawn not only in the art style of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, but little parts of it have been made to fit inside of that universe.

This franchise has, similarly, been the source for countless memes over the years so it makes sense that it would intersect here.

We won’t spoil it as the comic can be viewed for free on Twitter and in the embeds below. Unfortunately Twitter isn’t the best place to read a comic split across multiple images and into five separate tweets, but it’s easy enough to follow.

Sometimes comics by Merryweather are turned into animations for YouTube and we really want to see it happen for this one.
