Boston Dynamics robots are coming for your (parkour) job

As Boston Dynamics is now famous, the company has released another video showing off some impressive feats that its robots are capable of.

The robot in question this time around isn’t the familiar quadrupedal Spot, but the bipedal Atlas.

A pair of Atlas robots pull off a rather tight parkour routine going through jumps, twists and even backflips.

The routine ends with one Atlas raising its arms in victory, and the other pulling off the classic “dust shirt off my shoulder” move. Cocky bastards.

While we’d be happy with just over a minute of engineering wonder, Boston Dynamics has given us a bit more. Alongside the “Partners in parkour” showcase above, the company has already a companion piece embedded below.

Various Boston Dynamics employees shed some light on Atlas and how it manages to do what we just saw.

Here we learn that this incarnation of Atlas is around five feet tall weighing 190 pounds. For all of us outside of America that’s 152.4 centimetres and 86.18 kilos. We didn’t expect such an agile machine to weigh that much compared to the stocky stature.

As for why parkour was used here, aside from the fact that it looks cool, it’s because it’s difficult on just about every level and an interesting test for Atlas and its team.

In the video we also see some work being on on Atlas to build and repair the robot. We know that humans are pack animals that quickly form bonds, even with intimate objects, but it’s a bit unsettling seeing Atlas taken apart and bleeding hydraulic fluid in that footage. It’s almost like seeing real gore with the same unsettling feeling.

On the other side of the coin, for the sadists out there, there’s ample footage of Atlas whiffing it and taking some hard knocks in failed attempts at the routine.

Finally we have to mention that at around five minutes and 22 seconds into the video it looks like Atlas is being controlled with a wired Xbox 360 controller.
