CD Projekt Red’s ‘It’s All about You’ is dodgy for content creators

CD Projekt Red has started a new initiative to highlight community work called “It’s All about You” which crams fan work into a highlight video.

The first It’s All about You video can be watched in the embed below. The focus of episode one is Cyberpunk 2077 and our favourite from the bunch is a LEGO recreation of Johnny Silverhand’s Porsche 911 II (930) Turbo.

We’re big fans of LEGO here at Hypertext and the build was made to fit into LEGO’s old six-wide Speed Champions format.

What’s also impressive here is the sheer variety of fan creations. There’s a lot of cosplay and digital art, as you may expect, but we didn’t expect a clay sculpture, a traditional piece of Japanese painted art, a live-action trailer recreation and more.

“We will be happy to include drawings, cosplays, gifs, videos, renders and whatever else you can come up with — as long as you made it yourself (or as part of a group) and it is connected to our games,” reads a description for It’s All about You.

Those interested in having their work featured in these videos should check out the dedicated site which allows anyone to submit their work.

It’s worth reading the fine print here as you’re granting CD Projekt Red the right to not only use your work in these fun videos on YouTube, but also in other avenues too.

“The videos belonging to this format may be broadcast on television, in VOD services, streaming services, in advertising spots, trailers, published on websites or in social media, regardless of the form of such materials and methods of distribution through which this dissemination takes place. CD PROJEKT S.A. has the right to grant third parties further consents to use the Creation for the above purposes,” part of the Ts & Cs read when you agree to a submission.

As a multi-billion Dollar company getting free content to use in advertising rubs us the wrong way. Sure the YouTube video acting as a spotlight for content creators is nice, but then to also use that content for paid advertising takes it a step too far.

We wish that part of the site instead said something along the lines of “we may contact you for paid work if your content is used in other places”.

Because of this, unless you’re fine with this huge company using your work without paying you, we can’t recommend people participate here.

After Cyberpunk 2077 launched in such an abysmal state and countless promises were broken over it, CD Projekt Red has lost all our good faith when it comes to matters like this.
