Yesterday the country celebrated National Women’s Day, or at least tried to, with COVID-19 in South Africa limiting what was possible on the day. Over the past 18 months, many of the important days that the country celebrates has taken a back seat to coronavirus and in the past couple of months, it is the delta variant of the virus which has garnered the most attention.
This as it has resulted in a significant and sustained increases in newly recorded fatalities.
Looking at the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH), 199 new fatalities have been reported, pushing the death toll to date to 75 012.
As for the other key figures in the report, 6 787 cases have been recorded over the past 24 hours. While this is lower than we have seen in recent weeks, we did see the number of infections peak as the week progressed, so it is still far too early to tell if we are fully out of the third wave.
For now, the total number of infections to date sits at 2 540 222, with the recovery rate registering 90.9 percent and over 15.28 million test having been conducted so far.
Shifting to the vaccine rollout, efforts to ramp up are yet to be realised, with only 16 104 jabs administered given yesterday’s public holiday. As of 17:00 on 9th August, 8 621 932 vaccines have been administered, with an estimated 3 591 495 people inoculated.
