Disney has graced us with a lightsaber umbrella

Disney has released a pair of trailers for Star Wars: Visions, an animated anthology of nine episodes created by seven Japanese animation studios. The highlight of this must be what can only be described as a lightsaber umbrella.

Originally teased back in July we now have a good look at the animation from the studios. Embedded below is the original version of the trailer which is in Japanese with English subtitles.

There’s also a version of the trailer available here with English voice acting instead. Please have your subs versus dubs debate someplace else.

Aside from the spinning lightsaber umbrella at the one minute mark of the trailer, it’s clear that the studios here did just about anything they pleased with the licence. This isn’t just stories set in the Star Wars universe, or retellings of existing plots, but something more original only loosely tied to what has existed before.

As the trailer, in either form, is a bit short, we can find a bit more revealed on the official Star Wars website. Here it reveals voice actors for both the English and Japanese casts.

For us English speakers some big names are included. Below is the English cast for each of the nine episodes:

  • The Duel: Brian Tee (Ronin), Lucy Liu (Bandit Leader), Jaden Waldman (Village Chief)
  • Tatooine Rhapsody: Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Jay), Bobby Moynihan (Geezer), Temuera Morrison (Boba Fett), Shelby Young (K-344), Marc Thompson (Lan)
  • The Twins: Neil Patrick Harris (Karre), Alison Brie (Am), Jonathan Lipow (B-20N)
  • The Village Bride: Karen Fukuhara (F), Nichole Sakura (Haru), Christopher Sean (Asu), Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (Valco), Andrew Kishino (Izuma), Stephanie Sheh (Saku)
  • The Ninth Jedi: Kimiko Glenn (Kara), Andrew Kishino (Juro), Simu Liu (Zhima), Masi Oka (Ethan), Greg Chun (Roden), Neil Kaplan (Narrator), Michael Sinterniklaas (Hen Jin)
  • T0-B1: Jaden Waldman (T0-B1), Kyle Chandler (Mitaka)
  • The Elder: David Harbour (Tajin), Jordan Fisher (Dan), James Hong (The Elder)
  • Lop & Ochō: Anna Cathcart (Lop), Hiromi Dames (Ocho), Paul Nakauchi(Yasaburo), Kyle McCarley (Imperial Officer)
  • Akakiri: Henry Golding (Tsubaki), Jamie Chung (Misa), George Takei (Senshuu), Keone Young (Kamahachi), Lorraine Toussaint (Masago).

We know Disney has unlimited money, but we’re a bit surprised by the sheer amount of familiar names here. It’s also nice to see that Temuera Morrison, the actor for both Jango and Boba Fett in several Star Wars projects, also makes a return here.

Looping back around to the lightsaber umbrella and it really reminds us of the days before the release of Episode VII – The Force Awakens. The reveal of Kylo Ren’s lightsaber, complete with crossguard, lead to countless jokes about continually more absurd versions of lightsabres.

A spinning umbrella with multiple blades would have fit perfectly into a parody like this.
