Galaxy Z Fold3 and Flip3 reportedly getting battery protector feature

Tomorrow, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 and Flip3 go up for pre-order, before the devices are expected to land in the hands of local consumers in mid-September.

When those devices do land, they could arrive with a battery protector feature according to a report from SamMobile. This is something that Samsung had previously rolled out to selected tablets, but now could be making its way to the manufacturer’s new foldables.

As for why the feature could be rolling out, much of the reason could do with preserving the integrity of the battery on both devices long term.

The battery protector feature limits the maximum charging capacity at 85 percent, as going to 100 percent or leaving it plugged in to charge at full capacity could impact the quality and performance of the battery after one year.

If that is the case, it would prove a little concerning, especially as neither the Fold3 nor Flip3 will be shipping with chargers in the box and there being quite a bit of conjecture over sustainability versus usability.

SamMobile says the Protect Battery function will be baked into One UI 3.1.1 (Samsung’s proprietary UI) for both of these foldables and should be viewable via the Device Care tab in Settings. Whether it can be toggled on and off, however, is unclear.

Either way, it looks like those who wish to get a lot of use out of the Fold3 and Flip3 without taking it to a service centre anytime soon, will need to be cognisant of the battery’s health. As such, you want to be conservative with the frequency of fast charging.
