Specs Comparison: Galaxy Z Flip vs. Z Flip3

When Samsung debuted the Galaxy Z Flip last year, we finally saw a foldable phone that transformed into a smaller form factor than a conventional smartphone, while blending the nostalgia of old school clamshell phones and the flexible display technology the company has been pioneering. So how does sequel (yes, we’re not in love with Samsung’s naming conventions either), the newly unveiled Flip3 5G compare?

We are yet to get to review both devices in full, having only given the first iteration a whirl last year, but we can for now see how the foldable clamshell phones contrast one another on the specs sheet.

To that end, it looks like Samsung has focused its attention on two areas – the cover display and processor.

Regarding the former, a larger 1.9″ Super AMOLED option is present compared to the 1.1″ flavour spotted last year. This yields more screen space to swipe through notifications and control settings/applications, but also affords the Flip3 the ability to take selfies using the main 12MP dual lens camera array for better shots while the device is closed.

It is a small addition, and perhaps one that was not even asked for, but it shows that Samsung is still thinking of ways to make the Flip3 functional while closed, which was an issue with the previous iteration.

The other change is the processor. The original Z Flip was not underpowered, but the new silicon in the Flip3 places in on par with what the larger and more expensive Fold3 is sporting, along with adding support for 5G. Yes, there was a 5G-focused iteration in between these two devices listed here, but we’ve chosen to ignore it giving connectivity was the only element that was different.

Like the Fold3, the new Flip3 is also IPX8 water resistant and features the Corning Gorilla Glass Victus tech on the display to improve its robustness.

The Flip3 shall carry the same recommended pricing as the Z Flip did when it was launched in SA. Sure, it’s not less expensive, but Samsung Mobile South Africa has at least tried to ensure it is on par with what consumers were paying for the first foldable clamshell.

Whether there are enough improvements to warrant upgrading or even venturing into this relatively new segment, remains to be seen.
