COVID-19 in South Africa: 17th September 2021

As we approach the weekend under adjusted level 2 lockdown, the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH) for COVID-19 in South Africa shows that fatalities have peaked once again.

It therefore serves a bleak reminder of the current state of affairs that living with the virus in this country involves.

According to the department, 311 new fatalities have been recorded over the past 24 hours, as the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa climbs sharply to 85 779.

As for infections, 4 215 new cases have been recorded, which is in keeping with the numbers we have seen for the past week. It consequently pushes the total number of infections recorded to date to 2 873 415.

Looking at the other numbers in the report, the recovery rate has increased ever so slightly to 94.2 percent.

As for the vaccine rollout, the past 24 hours has seen 220 450 jabs administered as the turnout at sites across the country remains solid. As of 17:00 on 16th September, 15 683 797 vaccines have been administered, while an estimated 7 734 069 people are inoculated at this stage.
