COVID-19 in South Africa: 2nd September 2021

With September now underway, people across the country are growing more and more anxious regarding COVID-19 in South Africa. We are yet to shake off the effects of the delta variant of the virus, a new variant was recently discovered locally and there is still the prospect of vaccination the majority of the nation, along with a predicted fourth wave come December.

Any way you slice, the citizens of South Africa continue to have pressure put on them. Looking at the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH) and not much has changed, with both infections and fatalities remaining high.

To that end, 9 544 new cases have been reported in the past 24 hours as the total number of infections to date climbs to 2 787 203. The NDoH also confirms that 235 fatalities have been recorded and while this is far less than the previous day, any loss of life due to the virus is of concern as the death toll rises to 82 496.

Looking at some of the other key figures, the recovery rate has remained at 91.9 percent with 2 560 605 recoveries reported and over 16.53 million tests having been conducted.

As for the vaccine rollout, the past 24 hours has seen 253 160 vaccines administered, which is promising given we are so far off of the NDOH’s population immunity targets at this stage. As of 17:00 on 1st September, a total of 12 841 537 jabs have been administered so far, while an estimated 6 145 216 people inoculated at the time of writing.
