This Steam Deck teardown comes directly from Valve

We’re used to seeing teardowns and disassembly of new devices as soon as they launch, but what we’re not used to is this content going up before the launch of a product, and for it to come directly from the company making said product.

This as Valve has released a video showing off the internals of the upcoming gaming PC handheld the Steam Deck.

The video, which you can watch in the embed below, focuses on disassembly with the aim of replacing the thumbsticks and storage. While Valve highly recommends against this, the narrator does point out that people can do whatever they want with their property if they acknowledge that they’re breaking the warranty.

The video is also meant to be a showcase of what’s inside this new device for those who are curious.

We also get to see some extra footage in this video of a Steam Deck being drop tested and generally abused. We’d love to see more of this footage, not just to see a Steam Deck suffer but to find out more about how resilient the PC is when it comes being dropped.

Something we didn’t expect to see is relatively little cooling. While the video doesn’t focus on what keeps the AMD Zen 2 APU cool, it seems to be just a single small fan combined with a heat pipe and thermal shield. From early hands on events with the Steam Deck cooling doesn’t seem to be a problem so this solution appears to work great despite its diminutive size.

A final point of interest here is the focus on removing the thumbsticks. We’re sure that was chosen for the video as the sticks need to be as deep as possible for ergonomics and are easy to access because of this, but it brings back memories of the Nintendo Switch drifting problems. Hopefully if the Steam Deck suffers any similar problems this video will help with replacements.

The Steam Deck is planned to be shipped out in December for those who pre-ordered the first batch. More batches and wider country availability are promised to come in 2022.
