If you’re experiencing problems in Windows 11, it could be an expired certificate

The launch of Windows 11 has not been without its issues, with the latest being a series of native apps and tools failing to perform as intended.

Microsoft was alerted to the problems earlier this week, with users noting that elements in the operating system such as the Snipping Tool, touch keyboard and emoji panel not loading.

“Starting on November 1, 2021, some users might be unable to open or use certain built-in Windows apps or parts of some built-in apps. This is caused by an issue with a Microsoft digital certificate, which expired October 31, 2021,” noted the company in an update.

The reason for the failure has been pinned down to an expired certificate, according to Microsoft, which lapsed on 31st October. In order to address the problem, Microsoft is in the process of previewing a patch – KB5006746.

The aforementioned patch is able to tackle the majority of the issues currently being experienced, but not all of them, with the Snipping Tool requiring a workaround that The Verge explains here.

For now, the preview patch addresses the touch keyboard, voice-enabled typing, emoji panel and a few other problems that have cropped up of late.

As for when stability will be returned to Windows 11, no mention of that has been made by Microsoft, but it will likely coincide with the patch moving out of the preview stage and rolled out to the wider community of users who have upgraded to the firm’s latest operating system.
