It’s been half a decade since The Mummy trailer without music

We are approaching a milestone in the lauded history of cinema this December as we approach the fifth anniversary of “The Mummy trailer without music”.

No we haven’t gone insane because 2021 has lasted so long. Back in 2016 an IMAX trailer for The Mummy (2017) was released with a major error: it lacked music and many other sound effects.

Again this sounds rather bland, but the audio that remained is what made it so funny. Only the short pieces of dialogue and, most importantly, the cast’s screams were left in.

The mere mention of Tom Cruise wildly yelling and co-star Annabelle Wallis whispering “no” is enough to get certain laughing.

We’ll stop trying to explain it and just let you watch it for yourself:

If that isn’t one of the funniest things you’ve ever seen then we can’t help you because it’s clear you have already died and we lack the technology to restart your cold, dead heart.

Isaac Feldberg on Twitter put out a tweet recently reminding the public of this anniversary. The above YouTube video seems to be the original upload of the removed video, something we know because it still has our like on it from five years ago.

The date on YouTube is 22nd December 2016, but that day may be off by a day or two depending on your time zone.

“Someone forgot to export the music and sound effects…,” reads the short description of the uploader, who also added an addendum to this description in November 2017.

“I have not edited anything from this video, it was released on YouTube before being pulled down within a few minutes, I managed to download and uploaded it here as is. This was amusing to me as I am a video editor myself, mistakes do happen even at the highest levels.”

The legacy of this dumb trailer may be the best part about the 2017 retry of The Mummy and the “Dark Universe”, or the “Monster Universe” as it was sometimes called.

There’s also the hilarious cast photo (see below) which was supposed to be a cool glimpse into this future of a set of movies that was meant to rival the MCU.

All we have left is this stilted picture of some celebrities awkwardly position in a void.
