Sony has finally done it: an all-black PlayStation 5 is coming

After, “when will you finally sort out supply issues?”, the most common question we’ve seen customers asking Sony about the PlayStation 5 is an all-black version to mirror previous consoles from the company, and that’s finally arriving next year.

The PlayStation 5 has infamously only been available in white, but now five new colours will join it.

Before we get into those colours it’s worth mentioning that anyone who already owns a PS5 won’t need to buy a new console just to change the colour. These new variants will be available as optional controllers as well as something new: console covers.

“These new console covers are beautiful and easy to use — simply remove your original white PS5 console covers and click your new ones into place. The PS5 console covers will be available for both the PS5 with the Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive and the PS5 Digital Edition and are sold separately from the PS5 console and DualSense controller,” Sony writes in an announcement.

Replacement covers for the PS5 have been made by third party companies for months now, most notably by dbrand. It’s good that Sony has taken this approach as it means more customisation is now available for the console that comes directly from its manufacturer.

This new collection of covers from Sony is “galaxy-inspired” and includes:

  • Cosmic Red
  • Galactic Purple
  • Midnight Black
  • Nova Pink
  • Starlight Blue.

You can see the full range of colours in the header image above or the video embedded down below.

The good news is that these new colours will be available in just a few months as we head into 2022. The bad news is that it’s a rollout and your country or territory may be left out.

“The Midnight Black and Cosmic Red PS5 console covers will become available starting in January 2022 at participating retailers in the following locations: USA, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Korea, and the Philippines. The Nova Pink, Galactic Purple, and Starlight Blue PS5 console covers will also launch in these locations during the first half of 2022. We plan to launch the PS5 console covers in additional territories during the year, and we’ll announce those details as they become available,” an announcement reads.

While South Africa is not mentioned by name, our little country has received various colours of the DualSense controllers in the past, so we have faith that local customers will be able to get their own roughly around the same time as many other parts of the world.
