COVID-19 in South Africa: 21st January 2022

As the country prepares for another weekend dealing with COVID-19 in South Africa, the numbers this week have looked mixed, with cases being relatively low, but fatalities still high.

The same goes for the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH). To that end 3 962 cases have been recorded in the past 24 hours, while 139 deaths have been reported too.

As has been the case this week, the NDoH provided a note alongside the report to explain that it has currently in an audit process, which would impact the daily fatality numbers in particular.

“Due to the ongoing audit exercise by the National Department of Health (NDoH), there may be a backlog of COVID-19 mortality cases reported. Today, the NDoH reports 139 deaths and of these, 31 occurred in the past 24 – 48 hours. This brings the total fatalities to 93 846 to date,” it explained.

The total number of infections to date now sit at 3 572 860, with the recovery rate remaining at 95 percent and over 21,93 million tests having been conducted so far.

Shifting focus to the vaccine rollout, the past 24 hours sees turnout at sites across the country improve compared to the previous day. To that end, 82 098 jabs have been administered, with a total of 29 251 262 vaccines administered in SA as of 17:00 on 20th January 2022.
