How to watch the Matric results announcement online

Tonight the Department of Basic Education (DBE) will finally announce the results of the Matric exams from 2021 and anyone can watch the event online, for free.

This will happen at 18:00 local time on TV, as well as the aforementioned live streams.

“Owing to limited space, the release will be broadcast live on SABC 1, SABC 404, and a clean Pool feed will be provided by the SABC while also being broadcast across the Departments social media accounts,” reads an announcement.

Said announcement then links to three ways to access the announcement online:

For those interested in how the show will go, the livestream from 2020 is still available and can be watched here. It comes in at around 90 minutes long so put that amount of time aside if you want to watch the whole thing.

You can see a screenshot of Angie Motshekga, the Minister of Basic Education, presenting in 2020 above. Motshekga will again be handling the announcements tonight.

Sometimes live streams hosted on YouTube will be available to share their URL before the video feed starts, but that has not happened this time, so anyone wanting to watch through this platform will need to go to the home page linked to above at 18:00.

After the announcement tonight Matrics can expect to receive their results from tomorrow, 21st January. The release of the 2021 results has been troublesome not because of of any irregularities, but because of a decision from the DBE to withhold public release under the guise of protecting student data under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).

This decision has since been reversed due to a court decision but has caused upheaval so close to the exam results being released. Hopefully this is a small, forgotten problem by the time the results are finally out.
