Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi announce plan to develop 35 new EVs by 2030

Electric Vehicles (EVs) continue to be the area of interest for most carmakers at the moment, with several German brands already pinning their colours to the mast.

In a bid to keep pace, Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi have announced an alliance to develop their own EVs over the coming years.

35 to be more precise, with the new models set to hit roads by 2030, starting with an all-electric version of the Nissan Micra seen in the teaser image above.

“The Europe region is already playing a key role in driving electrification under Nissan”s Ambition 2030 vision, with new vehicles and technologies arriving soon including the new Nissan Ariya, a new EV crossover and Nissan”s unique e-POWER technology arriving in Europe in the new Qashqai and X-Trail,” the Japanese carmaker noted in a press release.

No precise date has been mentioned for the car’s release, but the alliance plans to invest a combined $25.8 billion in electric technology.

“The Alliance has defined a common 2030 roadmap on pure-EV and Intelligent & Connected mobility, sharing investments for the benefits of its three-member companies and their customers,” added Renault in a joint statement for the alliance.

The joint venture will see the three companies develop five new EV platforms to share among one another, as well as seeing 80 percent of parts being common among the vehicles being produced.

“The Alliance is working with common partners to achieve real scale and affordability, enabling to reduce battery costs by 50% in 2026 and 65% by 2028,” the statement notes.

“With this approach, by 2030, the Alliance will have a total of 220 GWh battery production capacity for EVs across key production sites in the world,” it continues.

For now it remains to be seen which parts of the world the companies plan to launch the models in future, outside of their own and each other’s territories of course, but with three big car brands all of which have a presence in SA stating their intent, hopefully more EVs are destined for our roads over the coming decade.
