Steam Deck update is business as usual

Valve has provided a “January update” for the handheld gaming PC, the Steam Deck, and it seems that it’s full steam ahead for the platform.

This comes as comforting news after the device was delayed, originally intended for release right at the end of 2021.

“…we’re on track to ship Steam Deck on time. Global pandemic, supply issues, and shipping issues notwithstanding, it looks like we’ll be able to start getting these out the door by the end of February. You can view your estimated reservation availability window here, in case you’ve forgotten,” Valve writes.

February was the new launch month chosen after the delay so it’s a case of no news is good news for the release of the Steam Deck.

Something happening in the back end that consumers won’t interact with is more devices landing in the hands of developers so they can either adapt existing games to work better on the Steam Deck, or integrate it more closely for new titles.

If you follow the official OnDeck Twitter account you will see many developers showing off their games on the device. Valve states that “hundreds” of developer kits were sent out in the last month and more will follow them.

Finally there’s the Steam Deck Verified programme that aims to ensure all games are playable on the platform. This too is chugging along and making process.

“You’ll soon be able to see Deck Verified status for a growing set of Steam games. We’re checking four major categories: input, seamlessness, display, and system support. You can learn more about the program here,” Valve continues.

As we’re already half way through January it’s good to see that the Steam Deck is seemingly on track for its release next month. Hopefully the first waves are released without a hitch and South Africans, as well as people in other regions who aren’t officially supported, will be able to buy their own soon.
