Delay means no Steam Deck for Christmas

The Grinch must be at work because those hoping for a Steam Deck for Christmas have been met with a delay of two months.

The first batch of Steam Deck orders was scheduled to go out in December, but that is not happening for a familiar reason: manufacturing problems caused by the pandemic.

“We’re sorry about this—we did our best to work around the global supply chain issues, but due to material shortages, components aren’t reaching our manufacturing facilities in time for us to meet our initial launch dates. Based on our updated build estimates, Steam Deck will start shipping to customers February 2022,” Valve writes.

This February 2022 will be the new start date for shipping so customers who ordered later batches can also expect a two month delay.

As a reminder here’s what hardware is packed inside of this handheld PC:

• Processor: AMD APU
• CPU: Zen 2 | 4 core / 8 thread | 2.4-3.5GHz
• GPU: 8 RDNA 2 CU | 1.0-1.6GHz
• Screen: 7” | 1280 X 800 | 16:10 aspect ratio | 60 Hz | Touch enabled
• RAM: 16GB LPDDR5
• Battery: 40Whr | Estimated 2 to 8 hours of use
• Size: 298 X 117 X 49 millimetres | 669 grams
• Storage: 64 GB | 256 GB | 512 GB
• Price: $399 | $529 | $649

Reactions to the delay on places like Reddit and Twitter are rather tame with the general consensus that customers and onlookers alike would prefer a good product instead of a rushed one.

With the Steam Deck not available to South Africans we’re hoping to be included in the next batch of open orders which should be happening some time next year.

If this was any other product we would say that Valve is missing out on Holiday sales but, because this product is sold in pre-order batches we doubt the delay will actually affected the company financially.

“Again, we’re sorry we won’t be able to make our original ship date. We’ll continue working to improve reservation dates based on the new timeline, and will keep folks updated as we go.
