Walmart reportedly chasing tech trends as it looks into crypto and NFTs

Walmart is a retailer in the United States where you can buy nearly anything you can think of and soon that could include cryptocurrency and NFTs. This as Walmart has reportedly filed several trademark applications in line with the latest trends in technology.

According to CNBC, much like many of Silicon Valley’s largest tech firms, Walmart could seen be entering the metaverse, aiming to sell digital/virtual goods to its customers down the line.

The retailer filed aforementioned trademarks with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on 30th December last year, so we are still some ways off from their being a metaverse marketplace at people’s local Walmart, but the company is certainly thinking about how it can be a part of digital currencies and its associated products.

The retailer told CNBC in a statement that it is, “continuously exploring how emerging technologies may shape future shopping experiences.” That said it chose not to directly comment on the specific filings.

“We are testing new ideas all the time. Some ideas become products or services that make it to customers. And some we test, iterate, and learn from,” it added.

Should Walmart indeed choose to head down this path, it likely will not be long before other retailers in the US and perhaps other parts of the world look to the metaverse. It makes sense, considering the potential for a persistent virtual world to be used to sell products.

Added to this is the fact that brands like Adidas and Nike are also actively looking to play a part in this burgeoning technology sector.
