Boondocks reboot cancelled by HBO Max

HBO Max is not “officially” available in South Africa, but one of the series we had earmarked when it would land locally to stream was The Boondocks reboot. Now those plans have been dashed, with the streaming platform reportedly cancelling said reboot.

This according to actor Cedric Yarbrough, who voices the character of Tom DuBois, following a recent appearance on an episode of the Geekset Podcast (featured below).

It is a rather frustrating revelation, given that HBO Max had green lit two seasons of The Boondocks as part of a quasi-reboot.

According to those close to the project, the Aaron McGruder comic strip turned animated series, would see the main trio of Huey, Riley and Robert Freeman return to their Maryland suburb only to find the cantankerous Uncle Ruckus (no relation) running a neo-facist regime that has taken over things.

It sounds great, which is why the news of its cancellation is so disappointing. For a group of young adults who enjoyed the series in the early 2000’s, the show was a bit of a cultural touchstone, which is why a reinterpretation in the modern era would have proved so interesting to see.

Hopefully the reboot is not dead in the water and fans of the series can get HBO Max to revive it, with online communities having got the Warner Bros. owned company to change its mind recently with the Snyder Cut.
