Buy the PS4 version of Horizon Forbidden West and you can upgrade to PS5 for free

Horizon Forbidden West is set to launch as PlayStation-exclusive later this month, 18th February to be more precise, and in the build to its release, a number of international publications have stumbled across a nifty workaround for those wanting to save a bit of money.

To that end, it appears as if you can upgrade from the PS4 version of the game for free to the PS5 version, saving an estimated $10 in the process.

Looking at the South Africa pre-order listing and pricing for the standard PS4 and PS5 editions of Horizon Forbidden West (pictured above), that would represent a saving of R170.

We know that isn’t a lot of money given both iterations retail for more than R1 000, but every bit helps.

If you are wondering whether PlayStation and developer Guerrilla Games will close this loophole, that remains to be seen.

At the time of writing, Sony has committed to keeping the upgrades from previous-gen to current-gen consoles free, following some online backlash from the gaming community once details emerged for the different editions of the game that were going to be released.

“Last year we made a commitment to deliver free upgrades for our cross-gen launch titles, which included Horizon Forbidden West. While the pandemic’s profound impact pushed Forbidden West out of the launch window we initially envisioned, we will stand by our offer: Players who purchase Horizon Forbidden West on PlayStation 4 will be able to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version for free,” explained Guerrilla Games in a PlayStation Blog post.

Before you start thinking that this trick will work every time though, it looks like it will only apply to Forbidden West, with future titles carrying a potential $10 fee to upgrade.

“I also want to confirm today that moving forward, PlayStation first-party exclusive cross-gen titles (newly releasing on PS4 & PS5)–both digital and physical*–will offer a $10 USD digital upgrade option from PS4 to PS5. This will apply to the next God of War and Gran Turismo 7, and any other exclusive cross-gen PS4 & PS5 title published by Sony Interactive Entertainment,” Guerrilla Games’ Bo de Vries added in the same post.

We currently have the game in for review on PS5, so if you are still on the fence about this title, keep an eye out for coverage come 14th February next week.
