Despite a robot cat Lightyear still looks rather dour

Back in October 2021 we got our first look at the Lightyear movie by way of a trailer which impressed with the quality of its animation, but also perplexed with its serious tone.

With a full trailer now available and embedded below, this continues as the longer glimpse at the movie continues this rather dour note.

It seems that Buzz and other Space Rangers have found themselves trapped on an alien planet and our titular hero needs to travel into the stars to save everyone.

We got some Starship Troopers vibes from the base that we see in this trailer and the design of the aliens here, but then again maybe any aliens which look like bugs reminds us of that movie. Robotic pet toys used to be a huge fad in the early 2000s so it would be wild if that was brought back by a movie that’s essentially a prequel to Toy Story.

Breaking up this seriousness is Sox, a robot cat that we saw briefly in the teaser. It seems that Sox will be both the comic relief character for this movie as well as an obvious toy for Disney to put on shelves.

“The sci-fi action-adventure presents the definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear – the hero who inspired the toy – introducing the legendary Space Ranger who would win generations of fans. Chris Evans lends his voice to Buzz… Annie Award-winning director and veteran Pixar animator Angus MacLane, who co-directed 2016’s ‘Finding Dory,’ helms ‘Lightyear.’ Galyn Susman (‘Toy Story That Time Forgot’ short) produces,” reads the official description of the movie.

Hearing more of Evans’ vocal performance in this trailer and we couldn’t help but catch bits of Patrick Warburton in there. Warburton provided a voice to the character for the animated TV series Buzz Lightyear of Star Command so we wouldn’t be surprised if a tiny bit of that incarnation of the character has been carried over here.

Despite seeming a bit too serious for the source material, what we see here looks great and we’re excited for more.

Lightyear releases on 17th June 2022.
