How the Galaxy S22 Ultra compares to its predecessor

Samsung has a new top tier flagship phone after announcing its new Galaxy S22 Ultra earlier today at a Galaxy Unpacked event.

The new device is much in keeping with the recent Ultra tradition, sporting a number of high-end specifications and the best components that Samsung can currently muster, with the most notable element being the addition of a recessed S Pen stylus in the frame of the device.

Is it all about the S Pen though?

While we are still got enough time with the S22 Ultra to give a verdict on that front, we can still look at the key specifications of the new device compared to its predecessor, which is exactly what we have done in the table below.

At a glance it looks like many of the specifications are similar, with the exact same display dimensions and resolution, battery capacity, connectivity support and front/rear camera options.

What is interesting though, are the memory options, with the S21 Ultra topping out at 16GB RAM, whereas the S22 only goes as high as 12GB RAM. It is unclear why Samsung chose to do this, but there is at least a decent trade off with up to 1TB storage available for the S22.

Added to this is new silicon from Qualcomm and its 4nm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. We are still to benchmark it, so it will be an interesting tale of the tape, but Samsung has told us that the new processor brings many of the AI and performance elements of the S22 to life.

Once we review it, we should have a better idea if that is indeed true.

At the time of writing we do not have official local pricing and availability for the new Galaxy S22 Ultra lineup, so a comparison on that front is not possible.

Given that the S21 Ultra cost R27 999 (RRP) at launch, we should likely expect something in that ball park, meaning it will once again be aimed at those with plenty of disposable income.
